A guided walking tour (in all weathers!) will explore the industrial heritage of Cambridge's power generation and energy consumption: past, present and future.
The tour will visit urban-archaeological remains from what was - in its time - the largest industrial complex in Cambridge: the former site of the University & Town Gas-Light Company gasworks. Stops on the tour will include the gasworks' entrance gates, the war memorial and the site of former wharves on the River Cam.
Featuring local documentary sources such as maps, photographs, company records and eyewitness reports to describe the sights (and smells) of the former Cambridge gasworks, its operations, stories of its workers and evaluation of the environmental effects upon Cambridge.
Presented by Dr Gordon Davies, a volunteer at Cambridge Museum of Technology.
This (free) tour will take approximately 45 minutes and cover a (step-free) distance of approximately 1km on marked footpaths around the perimeter of Newmarket Rd, Cheddars Lane, River Lane and Riverside.
Meet outside the upper gate of Museum of Technology on the corner of Cheddars Lane (WhatThreeWords https://what3words.com/attend.shelf.guards)
