Introducing 'Esquina' by Susanna Heron

2:00pm-2:40pm on Saturday 9 September

Emmanuel College, St Andrew’s Street, CB2 3AP

Internationally recognised artist Susanna Heron will introduce her new large scale, site-specific commission ‘Esquina’ at Emmanuel College.

Integrated into the structure of the new architecture at Emmanuel College, the work responds to the ancient Oriental Plane Tree in the grounds. The title of the work, ‘Esquina’ refers to Spanish and Portuguese for an exterior projecting corner: it defines the meeting of two planes or pathways which often becomes a meeting place for people too.

Carved in Ancaster Hard White limestone in negative relief, Susanna says of the work, ‘with Esquina I have developed a form of drawing, not unrelated to the archaeological mapping of a landscape, where light-catching edges reveal depth and the presence of something hidden beneath the surface’.

During the talk the audience will have the opportunity to view ‘Esquina’ in the presence of the artist and hear about the inspiration behind the work.
