The Lawrence Room at Girton College

Available from 9am Friday 11 until 6pm Sunday 13 September

One of the hidden gems of Cambridge is the tiny Lawrence Room museum set among the quiet lawns and trees of Girton College, where antiquities discovered on the college site itself sit alongside artefacts from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece donated by college members over the years.

In our short film, Dr Dorothy Thompson FBA, a Fellow of Girton who specializes in Hellenistic Egypt, introduces one of our treasures among many: Hermione, a portrait mummy of the first century AD. We will hear about her life and times, and how she came to Girton.

The Lawrence Room is normally open to the public every Thursday between 2 and 4 pm, and to groups at other times by arrangement. We look forward to seeing you when the college is fully open to visitors once more.
