Maracatu: Afro-Brazilian percussion workshop

2:00pm-5:00pm on Saturday 7 September

Cambridge Joint Ex-Services & Royal Mail Social Club, Barnwell Drive, CB5 8RD

Experience a hands-on music workshop with "Baque Trovão" (the Beat of Thunders). Participants will learn the basics of the percussive elements of Maracatu, a fun and powerful Afro-Brazilian cultural tradition nearly 400 years old in Recife-Brazil. You will also witness the performance of our vibrant music and community. The workshop will be followed by socialisation at the local pub.

Baque Trovão is a not-for-profit musical community that celebrates the vibrant cultural heritage of Afro-Brazilian traditions. Established less than a year ago in Cambridge, Baque Trovão aims to promote social interaction and culture, embrace diversity, and bring fun to the local communities through captivating percussive rhythm and dance in our performances and parades.

Your instructors:

Meet Newton Peres, a Cambridge-based musician and cultural community developer. With over twenty years of experience, Newton has not only played and taught the art of Maracatu nationally and internationally but also immersed himself in Brazil’s street culture, mastering Afro-diasporic rhythms through close relationships with Masters and living the Carnival traditions in northeast Brazil.

Humberto Porto, founder and director of Baque Voador (Melbourne, Australia) and Tall Beat (Toronto, Canada), is an internationally recognised musician who combines Maracatu music with circus performance. Meet Humberto at this workshop to experience unique ways to incorporate artistic manifestations during his European tour.
