Kevin Cash, Head Porter at Christ’s College, talked to the Bridge the Gap (BTG) team about his favourite place in the College, what makes the College so special and what BTG walkers should look out for, amongst other things.
BTG: How long have you been a Porter?
KC: I have been a Porter for just over 11 years, starting at Clare College in 2004 before becoming Head Porter at Christ’s College at the beginning of 2014.
BTG: What motivated you to apply for the position?
KC: I’ve always lived in Cambridge and therefore understand the role that the University and Colleges play in the make-up of the City and surrounding area. So when I found myself in the position of having to look for a change in career the thought of working for one of the Colleges was very appealing. The variety of tasks involved in being a Porter was of particular interest; being the first point of contact for people coming into the College, helping people from all backgrounds, young and old, and providing a safe and secure environment.
BTG: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
KC: It’s hard to say... I guess helping people, knowing that you’ve done your best. There’s such a variety of activity taking place and interesting people who make up the College community. The academic side and the commercial activities during the vacation periods all require different things from the Porters.
BTG: Where is your favourite place in Christ’s College and why?
KC: First Court. As you enter college through the Great Gate and enter First Court it’s like you’re going back in time. The noise, hustle and bustle of a busy city seems to disappear and you’re greeted by a view of the Wysteria and Magnolia framing the Master’s Lodge doorway. Amazing most of the time, when in bloom magnificent.
BTG: What do you think makes Christ’s College special?
KC: The closeness of the College community; Fellows, students, staff, guests and visitors all have a major role in making the College what it is. Christ’s is a friendly place to live and work.
BTG: In your opinion, when is the best time of year in College and why?
KC: May Week and the period leading up to Graduation are fun times in College. Seeing the students winding down and relaxing after the exam period, knowing that you’ve played your part in their success is very rewarding.
BTG: Can you tell us about your most unexpected experience to date as a Porter?
KC: There are many, some of which cannot be repeated. However, recently there was a telephone call to the Porters’ Lodge from one of the rooms asking for help:
“I’ve locked myself in a cupboard.”
“How did that happen?”
“I wanted to see if I would fit in it.”
BTG: Can you name something for Bridge the Gap walkers to look out for?
KC: The statue of a young Charles Darwin. There are many paintings and sculptures of Charles Darwin as an older man but very few of him as a young man.
